Fleas, Fleas Go Away
Living in Flordia, fleas are a fact of life and so is using "spot on" pesticides to help control them. Although we may not be able to stop using these treatments we can supplement them with a more holistic approach.
- Use a flea comb
- Vacuum every 2 days areas your pet has access to
- Change vacuum bags frequently and seal the bag in a plastic bag before diposing
- Place a towel or blanket where your pet habitually sleeps and wash it every 2 days
- Wash uncarpeted floors weekly
- Sprinkle Borax on your rugs leave for an hour and vacuum
- Try adding apple cider vinegar to the pets water dish
- Supplement your pets diet with omega 3's
- Look for herbal products that contain oil/extracts of juniper, citronella, eucalyptus, cedar, Canadian fleabane or citrus
- If your pet also has food allergies try switching to a raw or home cooked diet. Fleas will add to your itchy dogs problems.
Looking forward to a less itchy summer.

Adoptions
February 3, 2008
Shelters and rescue groups are a great way to add a new furry friend to the household. After the holidays the shelters are busy taking in the puppys that people could not care for; you've heard the story; they bark, they chew, they're into everything, they pee in the house, I don't have time. So if you are looking for a new addition try the local shelters. If you just have to have a certain breed, check online, there is a rescue group for any breed you are looking for and they have somebody that's just waiting for you to take them home.
Get Rescued in Gulfport is an annual fundraiser for rescue groups and shelters. This years event takes place on March 1, 2008. Might be a good time to stop by and make some new best friends. for more information; www.getrescuedingulfport.com

Your New Puppy
December 31, 2007
Maybe you are one of the lucky people that got a new puppy for Christmas. Puppies are like little childern and along with all the love that you give them they need to learn how to act like a canine good citizens. It's never too early to start teaching your pup; potty training, leash walking, no jumping, no barking and socialization skills with other animals and people.
So now that you have to go to work how do you accomplish these tasks? One way would be to come home from work every few hours to let the puppy out for a potty break (a general rule of thumb for puppy potty breaks, how many months old they are + 1 = how many hours they can go without a potty break, 2 months old + 1 = 3 hours).
Of course coming home every 2 - 3 hours is not a practicle solution for everyone. Another option is to hire a professional dog walker. A dog walker can come by as often as needed during the day and provide the potty breaks, basic training and interaction that will help make you & your puppy happy and thrive in their new enviroment. If you...
